Zadar is a charming coastal town on the shore in the north of Croatia surrounded by monumental riches of medieval and renaissance times. It is also famously known for the contemporary architectural installment of the Sea Organ of Zadar.
What is the Sea Organ of Zadar?
The Sea Organ or ‘Morske orgulje’ in Croatian, uses a system of 35 pipes and chambers in tandem with the moving waves of the sea to create music. This 70 metre organ built under a set of large marble steps. was the brainchild of artist and architect Nikola Bašić as part of the project to redesign the new city coast (Nova rive). The site was opened to the public on 15 April 2005 and is a huge draw to Croatians and tourists curious to experience the harmonic sounds.
How to reach the Sea Organ
The Sea Organ is located on Istarska Obala Wharf. From Zadar Bus Station, you can take the 10-minute journey with the Line 4 bus. Taxis are easily accessible but if you fancy a leisurely stroll, you will reach the Sea Organ in 30 minutes.
Best time to visit the Sea Organ
When the sun is setting, find your spot on the steps of the sea Organ and get lost in the hypnotic sounds created by the waves washing over them while you watch the sky change colors as the daylight fades away.
Behind the Sea Organ you will find the Sun Salutation – another wonderful creation by Nikola Bašić. The installation has an ethereal pattern of glass panels that capture sunlight to power their own light show that is a tribute to the solar system. This just adds to the experience whilst you listen to the acoustic waves.
